Gas Thieves use Stolen Plates
Police point to a recent increase in both "pump and run" incidents and license plate thefts in some localities concurrent with rising gasoline prices. "There are several methods in the theft of gas, and that is one element," a Des Moines police officer said.
Stolen Plates on the Rise
The Hartford police said there has been an increase in stolen license plates and the vehicle registration stickers. The problem has existed for years, department officials said, but the situation has gotten worse. Capt. Stephen Heslin, the north district commander for the Hartford police, said that of the 1,044 larcenies committed in the city from Jan. 1 to March 6,555 of them involved the theft of license plates and registration stickers. Captain Heslin said he thought people are stealing the plates and stickers because they cannot afford the insurance, taxes and the registration fees required to get their own stickers. And, he said, this type of crime is hard to stop.
